Discussion: Write a paragraph or a short paper to explain the requested information. Why is this important to the history involved?

1.  The fighting on the beach was brutal.  The Germans had planned on stopping the invasion at the water's edge.

a.)  Describe the German defensive works.

b.)  Explain how it was that the Americans managed to overcome the defenses along the beach.

2.  Read the discussion of the film and of D-Day by Stephen Ambrose - Ambrose on D-Day. Then go to the Encyclopedia Britannica site Imagining Private Ryan and the accompanying Normandy site (Especially the Omaha pages).  Compare the film to the real events -- how real is Saving Private Ryan?
