Discussion

1. The Vietnam was America's most controversial war. Many Americans died in the midst of all of the battles as protests raged at home. Briefly research the war. In a short paper, answer these questions:

  • Why did the US get involved there, both specifically and as a matter of overall foreign policy?
  • At the greatest level, what was the extent of the US combat power in Vietnam?
  • In casualties, how does Vietnam compare to other wars the US has fought?
  • Why were there such strong protests against the war?

2. How did the war end for the US? How did the war end for the Vietnamese? How is this possible?

3. Is the US better or worse off because we lost? Is Vietnam better or worse off because the North Vietnamese won? Why?
