December 16 - German counterattack in Ardennes begins Battle of the Bulge. 2 Panzer

- 101st Airborne under McAuliffe surrounded in siege of Bastogne. McAuliffe replies to
German surrender demand: "Nuts."
December 20 - Patton turns whole army (250,000 men) north amid miserable weather.

January 3 - Montgomery finally begins attack on the northern shoulder of the German
'Bulge'.
January - General Dwight D. Eisenhower, Supreme Allied Commander, Europe promoted to
five-star (General of the Army) rank.
January 12 - Russian offensive from the Vistula (Warsaw) to Berlin begins - 400 miles.
March 3 - Patton reaches the Rhine near Coblenz.
March 22 - Patton crosses the Rhine near Nierstein, 1 day before Montgomery. Patton
urinates in Rhine March 24
Bradley commands the largest US Army in all history: 1.3 million men in 4 armies (12
corps, 48 divisions); Ike commands all Allied forces in Western Europe including North
Africa and Italy - 85 divisions with 4 million men total.
April 11 - US forces under Simpson reach the Elbe at Magdeburg.
April 16 - Russian offensive begins from the Oder.
April 21 - Zhukov enters Berlin.
April 22 - Patton into Czechoslovakia.
April 25 - US & USSR armies meet at the Elbe.
