Part II starts with Patton speaking French to a crowd on Corsica, commending the
French in the Resistance success in harassing the Germans. He promises France will again
be free. He is called to Malta and Cairo, but largely plays the tourist. The Germans
follow these travels with concern. They think he will lead the Allied assault into the
continent. Finally, he goes to London. In London he is given a
room and told by General Smith of the plan to use him as a decoy. He gives a speech to the
Knutsford ladies club that goes awry because he omits the Russians and implys that
British and Americans will rule in the post-war world. Patton gets out of trouble, goes to
France, where he receives command of the 3rd Army from
Bradley. Patton leads the breakout from Normandy and tears through France with only
gasoline supplies slowing him down.
Meanwhile, Paris has been liberated and Montgomery is driving into
Belgium. The Germans mount a huge counter-attack, starting the Battle of the Bulge. The
101st Airborne Division is surrounded at Bastogne. They are relieved by Patton's 3rd Army
in an unbeleivable feat -- pulling out of a winter battle, changing direction 90 degrees,
moving 100 miles in three days and then going into the attack to reach Bastogne.
The Germans are
resigned to their fate and are burning their records. The Russians are closing in from one
side, and the British and Americans from the other. After the German surrender, Patton and
Zukhov are seated next to each other at a victory dinner. Patton insults him - he really
does not like Russians at all. He stated that he would attack in both directions if he saw
Germans on one side and Russians on the other. After some eccentric comments to Smith,
Patton is fired as commander of the 15th Army. He and Bradley meet to talk, and then they
part. The movie ends with Patton stating that "all victory is fleeting."
