Welcome

Welcome to the History in Film Web Site. I hope you find this site informative, entertaining and useful. This site was originally designed to complement a class that I taught at Hilton Head High School (SC). The basic idea behind the class was that, since our students are so media oriented to begin with, let's provide a version of a World History class that takes advantage of the many popular films that deal with historical subjects. The intent of this web site was to give my students a place on the Internet to review the films shown in class. It's grown considerably since then.

For Teachers

We all, from time-to-time, want to show our class a movie. Too often though, there is not an expectation of a real educational outcome. This site can help change that. Each film here has both a plot summary page and an outline. The plot summary can give your students an overview before they watch the film or serve as a review sheet after. The outline can be used by them to facilitate note taking as they watch the film. Some students respond more positively if they know there is graded work involved in a project. So, there is also a homework sheet for every film. To help with that there is also a Links page for each film, so the students can easily find outside resources if they are needed.

Not every student will have access to the Internet, so to help you I've provided a "Download" button for text files you can print and copy as handouts. They are all in Rich Text Format, so your word processor should be able to read them. The files are compressed with WinZip so they will load quickly. You can choose to select the pages you want individually or to download the entire package for that film from each film's Home Page. I didn't put the tests up for download. If you would like a test for a film, Email me and I'll send it back as an attachment.

School House Logo - click for notesIf there are additional notes for a film that will help you teach it, look for the 'School House Logo'.  That will take you to another page with helpful comments for that film. (Some films have this now, I'm working on the others.)

If you have a favorite film not included here, suggest it. Or better still, assign it to your class as a project. You can get the templates from me along with an instruction sheet. Have them watch the film and then create their own word processor pages and/or web pages. If you think they did a good job, send the finished product back to me and I'll include your film (with appropriate credit, of course) on this web site.

For Parents

I hope you have a favorite film that's included here. You might think about using this site to help you watch the film together with your student. The comments above for teachers naturally apply to you too.

If your student is in my class, the schedule is posted on the Internet as a linked page from my 'Teacher Page' on the Hilton Head High web site and as a link below. This will be most helpful to you should your student have an absence. (Or, I suppose, if you would just like to check to see when homework or tests are due.)

If you would like to watch a film with us, please 'come on in'. The door is always open.
