  • Lee orders Longstreet to attack the center of the Federal line
  • Longstreet argues - they have too many men, too well entrenched, too much firepower
  • Lee overrules.  "Retreat is no longer an option..... we will prevail."

  • 20th Maine relieved - to move to 'the safest place on the battlefield', the center of the Federal line

  • Lee lays out plan.  Massed artillery, 15,000 men in the attack, break the Union center
  • Longstreet again doubts.  "I believe this attack will fail.  No 15,000 men ever made can take that ridge."
  • Lee prevails.  The Federals are weak there.  The artillery will clear the center

  • Lee rides among the men.  He is cheered wildly

  • Longstreet issues orders.  Artillery to pound the Federal position, drive their artillery off.  Infantry to angle in to the clump of trees in the center

  • Longstreet predicts disaster - 50% casualties

  • Federal artillery resumes fire
  • With growing casualties, the Rebels advance, climb over a wooden fence
  • As they get in range, the Federal infantry opens fire
  • Hancock hit - refuses evacuation
  • Armistead orders double quick, hat held high on sword
  • Kemper hit
  • Armistead - "Virginians! Virginians!  Who will come with me?"
  • Rebels reach Federal line.  Hand-to-hand fighting
  • Armistead hit
  • The Confederate withdrawal begins - the Federals chant "Fredericksburg! Fredericksburg! Fredericksburg!"
  • Armistead asks of Hancock - "Tell him General Armistead sends his regrets.   Would you tell him how very sorry I am?"
  • As the survivors return, Longstreet rides out

  • Lee -- "It's all my fault."Lee visits the dying Kemper
  • Lee - "It's all my fault.  I thought we were invincible ..... we must rest now ..... never let them see you run."
  • Pickett - "General Lee, I have no Division."
