Discussion: Write a paragraph or a short paper to explain the requested information. Why is this important to the history involved?

1.  What was the purpose of Lee's invasion the north?

2.  During his movement north, why didn’t General Lee know the exact position of the Union army?   How did he find out?

3.  What were the Confederates originally after in Gettysburg?  What does this tell you about the condition of the South at the time?

4.  Why was the Federal Cavalry vital one the first day?

5.  Why was Little Round Top a crucial position in the Union line?  What was the 20th Maine's part in defending it?

6.  What was the disagreement between Lee and Longstreet?

a)  About the overall strategy of the battle.

b)  About the attack on July 3rd.

Critical Thinking:

1.  Lee says at the end, "All this has been my fault. It is I who have lost this fight."  Was he correct in this opinion?

2.  Did the Army of Northern Virginia ever have a real chance to win at Gettysburg?

3.  Briefly evaluate the skill, fighting ability and leadership of the Army of the Potomac at Gettysburg.
